Top reads of 2015 – number 17

Definitely one of the best books I read this year…

The Undertaking by Audrey Magee

under

Brutal, relentless and devastating, this was easily one of the best books I read this year. It is the 1940s, and Peter Faber is a German soldier on the front, getting married to Katharina, a young girl he has never met. He marries her to qualify for honeymoon leave; she marries him for security and the possibility of a widow’s pension if he dies. But while Peter is on honeymoon leave, they fall in love…

The story proceeds giving both characters’ points of view, and makes for very uncomfortable reading at times. The author bravely tells the story from the points of view of Nazi characters, and the behaviour of many of the characters is shocking.

This is an easy book to read, although the subject matter is serious and shocking. I thought this was an amazing book and I would highly recommend it.

  1. Woahh, this post sounds wonderful, and I’m glad it was one of your best reads this year. AND THAT COVER. I love the premise, and how it takes place in the past. I might give this a try :DD
