A play written in the 50s makes it to my list of top reads of the year…
Raisin in the Sun – a play by Lorraine Hansberry
This brilliant play is about the Youngers, a poor African-American family living in Chicago. A chance to escape from a life of poverty comes in the form of a $10,000 life insurance cheque – but family members have different views on how best to spend the money…
This play works well on every level. The writing is simple yet clever, the characters are interesting and have their own distinct voices – and the storyline is compulsive.
The play deals with interesting and complex issues, and gives a really interesting insight into the lives of poor black families in the US in the 1950s.
I never think of reading plays – this does sound like a good one!

It’s fab! Very easy to read with great characters, yet there is a lot going on here too.
