I have read 11 books this year that I have given the full five stars to. Here is number six …
We Were Liars by E Lockhart
This is a Young Adult novel but I think works well for Old Adults too! It is narrated by 17 year old Cadence as she recalls summers spent on her wealthy family’s island. With her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and Johnny’s cousin by his stepdad, Gat, the four become The Liars as they live freely on the island. But one summer (called Summer 15 as it was the year the Liars turned 15) something happens that Cady struggles to remember…
I found this story gripping and fascinating, although told very sparely. It is a short book, yet it is so well written that you feel like you find out a lot about the characters and you can picture the island. I plan to read Lockhart’s new book The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks in the new year.
