Eleven five-star reads: My top books of 2014 – number 4

During 2014 I have read 11 books that I have given a full five star rating to. This is fourth on my list…

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Night CircusIt is the late 19th/early 20th century, and two magicians begin a game with two opponents who must out-magic the other. Their arena is the Night Circus, which is a magical and mysterious place.

This book is pure fantasy, which isn’t usually my thing – but I loved it. The author describes the circus so vividly, and although it’s like a child’s fantasy it is beautifully rendered and brought to life. Many of the characters are fascinating and unusual, and there are a few scenes set in the future, which the main story eventually catches up with and it is interesting to see how it all comes together. I will definitely read this one again.
