Eleven five-star reads: My top books of 2014 – number 3

I have read 11 books this year that I have given the full five stars to. This is number three on my list…

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

Lemon CakeJust before her ninth birthday, Rose discovers she can taste the emotions of whoever has cooked the food she is eating. Through this unusual skill, she finds out about her family and how they are feeling.

This is a quirky book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written and wasn’t just about Rose eating things and tasting emotions, but much more about the other members of her family – mainly her brother Joe who is very detached and unusual. This book has had mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it and liked the quirkiness of it.
